Responsible Fashion for a New Year …
I was lucky to end the year discovering and subsequently coordinating a shoot for slow fashion designer Abissimoda. I then started the year standing in awe at the work of British men’s designer Bethany Williams at London Fashion Week Men this weekend . Both designers committed to creating clothing that is both morally and environmentally responsible.
Valeria of Abissimoda concentrating on the water aspect of the fashion industry, deemed as one of the dirtiest.
Her pieces utilising fabric which is hand dyed naturally.
Bethany Williams on the other hand concentrating on materials repurposed . From her 3 pieces on display at LFWM one came from waste materials that was then woven by women in San Patrignano, a substance abuse rehabilitation community near Rimini. Whereas the coat, for instance was made of repurposed electrical tape. Which after being designed by Williams, was then sewn by inmates at a women-only prison in Sutton, England.
Both designers prioritise as part of their ethos working with their community ; Valeria of Abissimoda in her collaboration with artisans and artists and Bethany Williams with her participation in programs designed to help inmates in HMP Sutton equip themselves for life after incarceration.
